#1Secret Service Kills Gunman Who Opened Fire Near White House Checkpoint

A 21-year-old Maryland man named Nasire Best was fatally shot by Secret Service agents Saturday evening after he approached a checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, pulled a pistol from his bag, and fired roughly three shots toward the White House. A civilian bystander was struck during the exchange and one agent was hospitalized as a precaution; President Trump was unharmed inside the residence. Best was previously known to the Secret Service after a July 2025 incident in which he walked into a restricted White House area, claimed to be Jesus Christ, and was arrested for unlawful entry.

#2MAGA Voters Trigger Anti-Incumbent Earthquake in GOP Primaries

The 2026 midterm cycle has already produced a string of historic upsets, with Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana finishing a distant third, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky falling nearly 10 points to Trump-backed Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas on the ropes after Trump endorsed challenger Ken Paxton. The Massie race alone shattered records as the most expensive House primary in history with over $32 million in ad spending. The losses signal a broader revolt among GOP base voters punishing incumbents who bucked the president on key votes.

#3Consumer Sentiment Crashes to Record Low as Gas Tops $4.55

The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index plunged to 44.8 in May, down from 49.8 in April — lower than at any point during the Great Recession or the COVID lockdowns. Seventy-six percent of Americans now say economic conditions are worsening, with 57 percent citing high prices as a personal financial burden, up from 50 percent last month. The average gallon of gas hit $4.55 as of May 22, and year-ahead inflation expectations ticked up to 4.8 percent.

The family of two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch confirmed the 41-year-old driver died after severe pneumonia rapidly progressed into sepsis. NASCAR held an emotional tribute at the Coca-Cola 600 on Saturday, his final competition circuit. He is survived by his wife Samantha and two children.

#5Russia Fires Oreshnik Hypersonic Missile at Kyiv, Killing 2 and Wounding 83

Russia launched a mass drone and missile barrage against Kyiv on Saturday that included the nuclear-capable Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile — only the third time the weapon has been deployed in the four-year war. At least two people were killed and 83 wounded as strikes hit residential buildings, government offices, schools, and a market across the Ukrainian capital. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov warned Secretary of State Rubio on Monday that Moscow intends to continue striking military-linked sites in Kyiv.

#6US-Iran Ceasefire on "Life Support" as Trump Rejects Tehran's Proposal

President Trump declared the fragile US-Iran ceasefire is on "life support" after calling Tehran's latest peace proposal "a piece of garbage." Despite the deal technically holding, Iran has reportedly attacked US forces more than 10 times and fired on commercial vessels nine times since the ceasefire began. Pakistan is mediating a back channel, and a sweeping interim agreement that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ease sanctions remains on the table, though neither side appears close to a breakthrough.

#7Pope Leo XIV Issues First Encyclical Warning AI Must Be "Disarmed"

Pope Leo XIV released "Magnifica Humanitas," a sweeping encyclical marking the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, warning that artificial intelligence risks becoming a tool of "domination, exclusion and death" without moral guardrails. The first American pope called on governments and institutions to ensure that lethal or irreversible decisions are never entrusted to artificial systems, writing that technology "takes on the characteristics of those who devise, finance, regulate and use it." He also urged priests not to use AI for writing homilies.

#8NASA Eyes Artemis III as Musk and Bezos Race for Moon Lander Contract

With the successful Artemis II crewed lunar flyby now in the books, NASA is pressing ahead on Artemis III, set to launch in 2027, in which astronauts will practice orbital docking with a commercial lunar lander. The actual moon landing is targeted for Artemis IV in 2028, and both SpaceX's Starship and Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander are vying to prove readiness first. NASA recently rolled out a key section of the Artemis III rocket at Kennedy Space Center.

It will be the first total solar eclipse visible from parts of Western Europe since 1999. #1088-Year-Old Army Vet Gets $1.7M in Donations to Finally Retire After Viral Video

Edmund Bambas, an 88-year-old Army veteran who had been bagging groceries at a Michigan Meijer store after General Motors stripped his pension in bankruptcy, received over $1.7 million through a GoFundMe campaign organized by Australian influencer Sam Weidenhofer. More than 62,000 people donated, and the outpouring inspired Weidenhofer to launch a new nonprofit charity called "For Your Service" to help other veterans in similar situations. Bambas served in the Army in 1966 and lost his wife seven years ago.
